History & Legend
Edward Teach, "Blackbeard", took the French slaver La Concorde in November 1717 and made her the Queen Anne's Revenge. She went aground at Topsail Inlet in June 1718, and he moved to a sloop at Ocracoke, where Lt. Robert Maynard's hired sloops Jane and Ranger killed him on 22 November 1718. Here, the Revenge stays afloat.
The horned-skeleton flag is the popular image, but it is a modern attribution: no description of Teach's true colors survives. The wreckers' false lights are an Outer Banks legend (the "Nags Head" story), not documented history. Diamond Shoals and the Graveyard of the Atlantic are very real.
